Schenkon race in Switzerland
Saturday the 15th of May I had a time trial race in Schenkon, Switzerland. After arriving on Friday, the weather wasn’t looking good at all so I knew that Saturday would be rainy day.
Our race started at 16:30. For the time trial, each person starts alone with a 30 second gap in between so I had to race all the way alone. My starting time was at 17:35. After having a good warming up, I had to wait under the heavy cold rain for more than 20 minutes. I wasn’t feeling well as I was freezing waiting for my start time.
I took off eventually with cold muscles which did not help at all… but I was very decisive that I’d give it my best. I kept pushing under the rain for several kilometers but my body wasn’t responding effectively because my muscles were cold. I tried to keep the high speed but then I realised that this wasn’t my day. I crossed the end line aware that I did not perform well although I did not know my final position.
I left directly to take a hot shower and get out of my wet clothes. I came back for the results and found out that I came at the 10th place which I wasn’t pleased about. However, I trust that I gave my b est taking into consideration the race conditions and now I am focusing on the World Championships in Canada.
Thomas LURZ (GER) collected a yellow card in today’s FINA Men’s 5K race and worried that might be the end of his consecutive championship streak in the 5K event. LURZ (GER) earned the warning for running into one of his competitors in the first of two laps in the spectacular venue on the shores of Lac-St-Jean in Roberval, Canada. It wasn’t a deal breaker for LURZ. Since winning the 5K event in Montreal at the 2005 FINA World Championships no other swimmer has beaten him at this distance. His first place finish today in a time of 57:42.6 confirms that he is the most successful male open water swimmer, with nine FINA gold medals in his collection. The accomplished German swimmer also has collected two each of silver and bronze medals at FINA World Championship events. But the most important medal is the Olympic bronze medal he earned at the 10K competition from Beijing in 2008. Today’s 20 degree water temperature of Lac-St-Jean was favorable to the German, and was vastly different to the challenge presented by the 16 degree cold water that affected his 10K race on Sunday. LURZ had previously won the 10K event at the 2004 and 2006 world championships but on Sunday could only manage a 6th place. LURZ won both the 5K and the 10K events on Ostia Beach last summer during the 2009 FINA World Championships.
Those aforementioned NCAA runner-up spots were all behind the same athlete, Lawi Lalang, a Kenyan competing for the University of Arizona. The thoughtful and analytical Derrick recalls, “In the 3K my senior year indoors, there’s a point with 300 to go where if I think if I had defended my position and not let him pass me,” a victory could have been his. But he surmises, “As I look back, I’m proud of most of the races I ran. Being around really, really good guys drove me to a new level. In general, it was a net positive to be around those kinds of guys.” That level allowed him to set an American collegiate 10,000-meter record of 27:31.38.
Nishikawa was essentially a shoe-in after winning both distance races at the World Championships trials over two weekends of NorAm racing in January. In the first in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Nishikawa won the skiathlon. On Sunday, he won the 15 k freestyle individual start in Duntroon, Ontario, to secure his ticket.
In the women’s race, the much-anticipated re-match between Dayna Pidhoresky and Canadian National Half marathon Champion, Megan Brown of Athletics Toronto, never materialized. While Pidhoresky has looked impressive in victories at Around the Bay 30K, Harry’s Spring Run Off 8K and Sporting Life Toronto 10K this Spring, Brown gave her a good hiding at the Banque Scotia 21K de Montreal in April, winning by almost a minute on a blustery, wet morning. Seeming eager after not racing since May, Pidhoresky took it out hard from the start, with only Ethiopian Aselefech Asefa hanging on. Apparently suffering the after effects of a cold, Brown stepped off the course after 4km. Like Coolsaet, Pidhoresky was able to lose all of the competition in the Park, and admitted to easing up over the final 2k, after the strong start. “It was a hard effort, today,” said Pidhoresky afterwards. “It felt good to be out there racing again, and to get another Canada Running Series victory.” She will go on to race Brown again for the National 10K Road Championship at OASIS ZooRun on September 24th. Current score 1-1!

We headed down to the course and with time trials I plan almost each minute out before my start time. I got on the rollers at 9:55 am to do my 40 minute warm up and felt pretty good.
